Unlike the pH regulators commonly available on the market, pH Down is not an ordinary acid. It is a precisely formulated element that simultaneously regulates and delivers nutrients and buffers the nutrient solution. In addition to the balanced mix of acids, we have also incorporated buffers to stabilize the pH and control the calcium content in hard water. As growers, we always have a wish list of things we would like to make our lives easier. At the top of the list is a pH buffer that works so well that we could go on vacation for two weeks and when we return, the pH of the nutrient solution would still be the same.
The problem is that this is only possible if the nutrient solution is weak, if there is not much activity going on in the solution, and if our plants are growing at an average rate. If the growth is going to be rapid, and there is a lot of ion removal and all the complex interactions going on in the solution, then this stability is unthinkable. However, we are no longer at a loss. Today we can achieve satisfactory stability and other benefits. A good pH-controlled solution is one where the pH is adjusted only once, when the system is started. We do not claim to have achieved this exactly, nor in all situations and with all nutrients. But when it comes to pH control, which we have tried in our greenhouses by combining pH Down with Flora Series and Mineral Magic nutrients, the plants have grown for several weeks without the need for pH adjustment.
